Chapter 7

Bryce held his breath and waited for Josie’s response, although he didn’t stop touching her. Couldn’t. Warm and soft and silky beneath his fingertips, he wanted more. So much more.

Please say yes.

Josie turned in his arms to face him, dislodging his hand. Her face remained hidden in the pitch black, but her warm breath tickled his chin. “I…” She paused, almost seeming to hold her breath. “I guess you’d better kiss me, then.”

Thank God.

Bryce didn’t need to be asked twice, lowering his head in a rush, only to bump her cheek with his nose. “Ouch.”

Josie giggled. A sound he hadn’t heard from her in years. Sexiest damn noise ever.

“Let’s try that again.” Angling his head based on the first try, he found her lips. Deliberately, he leashed the urgency riding him, to offer her something gentle. Reverent.

She tasted like toothpaste and sweetness. Not that he would admit it to himself this past year or so, but he had craved this since the last time.

She pulled away slightly, breathless. “If you’re going to kiss me, don’t hold back.”

With a half-laugh, half-groan, he deepened the kiss. Long denied desire combined with the frantic day, and the new discoveries about her. About himself too. He couldn’t hold back anymore if he wanted to. While plumbing the secret depths of her mouth and tangling his tongue with hers, he trailed his left hand up her thigh, over her hip, and searched for the swath of skin at her waist, which had tormented him while they talked.

Ah, there. She shuddered under the contact.

“Too cold?” he asked against her lips.

“No,” she whispered, before resuming the kiss. She caught his lower lip between her teeth and desire zinged all the way through his body.

He jerked back, breathing hard. “Too fast. Too soon.”

She shook her head, trying to tug him closer. “Not soon enough.”

He knew what she meant. Still, he held strong. “We’ve had so many misunderstandings. We should take this slow. Get to know each other again.”

She froze beneath him, the puffs of their heavy breathing the only sound in the tent. Her stillness was a warning.

“We can’t.”

“Can’t what?”

“Get to know each other again. We can’t be friends…or lovers beyond tonight.”

What the hell?

Without moving away from her, he fumbled for the lantern and turned on the light with a flick. He needed to see her face for this. “I’m not having a one-night-stand with you.”

“Fine.” She’d shut him out. Again. Her face was a total blank.

Impotent anger beat against his insides, battering them like a storm raged at the mountains. “That’s it? Fine?”

Her gaze hardened. “Yeah. Fine. You won’t do just tonight. I can’t do a future.”

“Why?”

A little wrinkle appeared between her eyebrows. “I guess we’re at an impasse.”

He ran a hand through his hair needing some outlet for the anger building in him. “This makes no damn sense. Why can’t you do a future?”

Now her gaze skittered away. “My situation hasn’t changed.”

Her situation? What was she talking about? He searched her face, mouth tight, jaw strained, and realization dawned.
